Date palm groves line the river Nile near Karima, Sudan, on Tuesday, March 27, 2007. Dates are an important crop in north Sudan and central to Nubian economy and culture. As well as a source of fruit, the fronds are used to weave baskets and make ropes and the trunk is used for roofing beams. The dates are also distilled to make the strong spirit, araki.
