A woman who was raped by a local man in her village waits to receive treatment from MSF at Rutshuru Hospital, North Kivu, DRC, on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008. Her 1 year-old son witnessed the attack and has cried regularly since. Sexual violence used to be perpetrated only by armed factions but now more and more cases of rape by ordinary people are occuring. Sexual violence is systematic in DRC with the brutality of attacks often leaving the victims with severe damage to reproductive organs, resulting in multiple fistulas and incontinence. According to the UN Population Fund an average of 1,100 rape cases are reported each month.
